Keonjhar Boy's Noble Organ Donation Honored with State Funeral Ceremony
A 12-year-old boy from Keonjhar district in Odisha, whose family made the courageous decision to donate his organs after his tragic death, was accorded a solemn guard of honor and state funeral on Friday evening. The young boy, Shubham Aich, succumbed to injuries sustained in a devastating road accident that occurred on February 14.
Tragic Accident and Hospitalization
Shubham Aich, son of Upendra Aich from Jamira village in Hatadihi block, was a Class VII student at the local primary school. He was residing with his uncle, Babaji Behera, in Ana village at the time of the incident. On February 14, while traveling to Puri with his uncle's family, the boy was struck by a jeep near Swargadwar.
The impact caused critical injuries, necessitating immediate medical attention. He was swiftly shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for specialized treatment. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Shubham passed away a few days later during his hospital stay.
Family's Selfless Decision to Donate Organs
In the midst of their profound grief, Shubham's parents, Upendra and Mitarani Aich, made an extraordinary decision. They consented to donate their son's heart and kidneys to help other patients in desperate need of organ transplants. This act of generosity ensured that their son's tragic passing could give life and hope to others.
Following the successful organ retrieval procedure at the hospital, Shubham's body was transported back to his native village on Friday evening to prepare for his final rites.
Guard of Honor and Community Tribute
A solemn procession was organized from Marigaon chowk to Jamira ground, where officials had arranged a ceremonial guard of honor for the young donor. The event was attended by thousands of villagers, local police personnel, and community dignitaries who gathered to pay their respects.
The atmosphere was one of both mourning and profound respect as the community came together to honor the boy's legacy. Subhakanta Nayak, a resident of Hatadihi, expressed the collective sentiment, stating, "We are proud of the noble act. He will always be remembered for his organ donation."
The state honors and guard of recognition served as a powerful tribute to both the young boy and his family's selfless decision during their time of unimaginable loss.
