Thiruvananthapuram/Thrissur: The state reported 19 new cases of Shigella infection on Thursday, bringing the total number of cases recorded in the state this year to 186. Additionally, one case each of Mpox and amebic meningoencephalitis has been reported from the state capital.
Among the fresh Shigella cases, nine are from Kozhikode, three from Thrissur, two each from Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur, and one each from Kollam, Ernakulam, and Malappuram.
Kozhikode and Wayanad have recorded the highest number of infections during June. Outbreaks have currently been declared in four districts: Kozhikode (33 cases), Wayanad (18), Thrissur (9), and Alappuzha (3).
Shigella infections have also been reported in other districts during June, including Malappuram (14), Thiruvananthapuram (13), Kollam (8), Kannur (7), Idukki (3), and Ernakulam (2).
New Cases in Thrissur
Five people tested positive for Shigella in Thrissur district in the last two days. They include a 66-year-old man from Arimboor and his 60-year-old wife, who tested positive on Wednesday. A 12-year-old girl and her four-year-old twin sisters at Vallathol Nagar also tested positive on Thursday. They were undergoing treatment at the Thrissur Medical College Hospital and were discharged as their conditions were stable. Health officials have started preventive measures, including super chlorination of water sources in the area.
The health authorities said the condition of the elderly couple from Arimpoor is also stable. The couple had gone to the Primary Health Centre at Arimboor Kaipally after they became unwell. Subsequent tests confirmed that they had Shigella infection. They were continuing treatment at home but were shifted to hospital for observation after they tested positive for Shigella. With this, the total number of patients diagnosed with Shigella infection in the district this year has risen to 10.
Among them, a 43-year-old man from Kodakara died a couple of days ago. Another 45-year-old woman died due to dengue at Nattika. She died on Wednesday, but her test results came on Thursday.
