Lightning Injures Seven Devotees at Kolhapur's Jyotiba Temple Fair
In a distressing incident at the annual Jyotiba temple fair in Wadi Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, seven devotees from Arjuni village in Kagal suffered injuries due to a lightning strike on Wednesday afternoon. The event unfolded between 4:15 PM and 4:30 PM, casting a shadow over the festive gathering.
Details of the Incident
The victims were waiting under a tree near the Dakshin Darwaja (south gate) of the temple premises when the lightning struck. According to district epidemic officer Sushant Revadekar, the lightning hit a spot approximately 7 feet away from where the devotees were standing. The injuries were caused by the electromagnetic field generated by the lightning, rather than a direct hit, highlighting the unpredictable dangers of such natural phenomena.
All seven injured individuals were promptly transported to CPR Hospital in Kolhapur for medical attention. Authorities have confirmed that they are now out of danger and receiving necessary care, providing some relief amidst the chaos.
Widespread Weather Havoc in the Region
Meanwhile, the lightning strike was part of a broader spell of severe weather that lashed Kolhapur city and surrounding areas on Wednesday. Heavy rain, hailstorms, and gusty winds battered the region, leading to broken tree branches and disruptions at several locations.
In Satara district, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning were reported. Tragically, at Khed Budruk village in Khandala tehsil, a sheep died due to a lightning strike. Additionally, in Man tehsil, six houses sustained partial damage from stormy winds, exacerbating the impact on local communities.
Agricultural and Livestock Losses
The adverse weather conditions have also taken a toll on agriculture and livestock in the area. Over the past three days in Satara district, crops spanning 192 hectares have been damaged due to heavy rainfall, with Khandala tehsil reporting the maximum extent of destruction.
In Solapur, gusty winds caused significant damage to shelters, while in Sangola, one cow died following the collapse of a cattle shed. These incidents underscore the far-reaching consequences of the severe weather, affecting both human lives and livelihoods.
