LPG Shortage Disrupts Community Meal Services in Ranchi
Amid a severe LPG crisis gripping the region, social organizations dedicated to providing affordable meals to the underprivileged in Ranchi are encountering significant operational hurdles. These community kitchens, which serve as a lifeline for many, are now scrambling to find alternative fuel sources to maintain their essential services.
Marwari Sammelan Adapts with Traditional Coal Ovens
The Ranchi district Marwari Sammelan, known for its long-standing social service initiative, has been offering lunch at a nominal rate of only Rs 10 per plate for the past four years. Pramod Agarwal, associated with the service, revealed that the organization prepares approximately 200 plates of food daily. Despite the LPG shortage, they have refused to halt operations, instead transitioning to traditional coal ovens to continue cooking meals. This shift underscores their commitment to supporting the community even during challenging times.
Roti Bank at Rims Turns to Electric Stoves, Reduces Food Quantity
The crisis has also severely impacted the Ranchi Roti Bank, which operates at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) and provides daily meals to attendants of hospitalized patients. With LPG cylinders becoming increasingly scarce, the organization has switched to electric stoves for meal preparation. However, this adaptation has come at a cost; they have been forced to reduce the quantity of food served to ensure the service persists despite limited resources.
Vijay Pathak, founder of the Roti Bank, expressed the unprecedented difficulty faced this time, noting that even during the Covid-19 pandemic, they managed to sustain their kitchen without major issues. "For the last six years, we provided food to people. But this time, it became extremely difficult," Pathak stated. He emphasized that nearly 90% of patients at Rims come from economically weaker sections, making the daily meal service a critical relief. "If I can provide food at least once a day, that’s a great relief for them. So I will not stop the service at any cost, no matter how hard it becomes," he affirmed.
