Lucknow College Offers Free Deliveries Under New Scheme

Lucknow: A private medical college in Lucknow has launched a comprehensive maternal and child healthcare initiative, providing free normal and caesarean deliveries to all pregnant women. The scheme, named ‘Shishu Maa Suraksha (SMS) Yojana’, was introduced on Thursday by Era Lucknow Medical College and Hospital.

Key Features of the Scheme

Under this initiative, pregnant women will receive a wide range of free services, including medicines, diagnostic tests, surgical procedures, hospital stay, and meals during admission, labor, and postpartum care. Additionally, women undergoing normal delivery or C-section will receive financial assistance of Rs 2,500 along with a baby care kit at the time of discharge.

Objectives and Impact

The primary goal of the scheme is to encourage institutional deliveries, thereby reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. It aims to remove financial barriers for all women, irrespective of their income group or eligibility under any government scheme. Dr S P Jaiswar, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at Era Lucknow Medical College and Hospital, emphasized that the initiative is designed to promote safe motherhood among economically weaker sections. He added that the scheme covers normal deliveries and treatment for various illnesses free of cost.
