A tragic incident occurred on the Yamunotri trek route in Uttarakhand, where a 52-year-old pilgrim succumbed to a heart attack while undertaking the arduous journey. The devotee, identified as Ram Singh from Haryana, was part of a group heading to the Yamunotri temple, one of the four sacred Char Dham sites in the Himalayas.
Incident Details
The incident took place near the Janki Chatti area, approximately 6 kilometers from the Yamunotri temple. According to officials, Ram Singh complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing around 10:30 AM on Tuesday. Despite immediate assistance from fellow pilgrims and local guides, he collapsed and could not be revived. A medical team from the nearest health post was summoned, but he was declared dead on arrival.
Response and Rescue Efforts
The district administration and police were alerted, and the body was brought down to the base camp at Hanuman Chatti for postmortem. Officials have urged pilgrims to undergo health check-ups before embarking on high-altitude treks, especially those with pre-existing medical conditions.
The Yamunotri trek, which starts from Janki Chatti, involves steep ascents and thin air at altitudes exceeding 3,200 meters. Such conditions can strain the cardiovascular system, leading to emergencies like heart attacks.
Safety Measures
Authorities have stationed medical teams and oxygen cylinders at key points along the trek. Pilgrims are advised to acclimatize properly, stay hydrated, and avoid overexertion. The Char Dham Yatra season, which began in May, has seen thousands of devotees, with officials emphasizing safety protocols.
This incident underscores the need for better emergency infrastructure along pilgrimage routes. The state government has been working to improve facilities, but the challenging terrain often delays rescue operations.
The deceased's family has been informed, and arrangements are being made to transport the body to his hometown. The pilgrimage continues for other devotees, with heightened awareness of health risks.
