Karnataka's Asian Games-bound athletes, including 400m hurdler Yashas Palaksha and sprinter Sneha, have called for Chief Minister DK Shivakumar's intervention to secure better training facilities and financial support. The appeal came after both athletes secured their spots for the upcoming Asian Games by winning medals at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships held on Saturday.
Qualification Achievements
Yashas Palaksha clinched the gold medal in the men's 400m hurdles event, while Sneha bagged the silver in the women's sprint event at the championships. Their performances not only earned them medals but also secured their places in the Indian contingent for the Asian Games. According to the Athletics Federation of India, the Inter-State Championships serve as the primary qualifying event for the Asian Games.
Plea for Support
Both athletes expressed concerns about inadequate training infrastructure and financial constraints. Yashas stated, "We have the potential to win medals for the country, but we need proper facilities and financial backing. We urge the Chief Minister to provide the necessary support." Sneha echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the need for better coaching and equipment. The athletes have requested a meeting with CM Shivakumar to discuss their requirements.
Impact on Karnataka's Athletics
Karnataka has a strong tradition in athletics, but recent years have seen a decline due to lack of investment. The qualification of Yashas and Sneha is seen as a positive sign, but sustained support is crucial. Sports officials in the state have noted that many talented athletes drop out due to financial difficulties. The athletes hope that CM Shivakumar's intervention can reverse this trend and inspire more youngsters to take up athletics.
