This devastating legacy has claimed multiple lives, tested the limits of human resilience, and forged bonds of steel among surviving members. The stark tally stands at two survivors, five tragic casualties, and one courageous warrior currently fighting the disease.
The Initial Diagnosis That Shattered Peace
Anjana Tiwari's world collapsed when cancer invaded her life at age 50. Diagnosed with stage-3 oral cancer, this bombshell shattered her tranquility completely. Her husband Anurag immediately rushed her to Mumbai's renowned Tata Memorial Hospital, where successful surgery marked the beginning of an arduous, lengthy recovery journey.
However, the family's respite proved heartbreakingly brief. Just as Anjana began convalescing, her sister-in-law Rachna received a devastating stage-4 breast cancer diagnosis during the COVID-19 pandemic's peak. Lockdown restrictions created eerie isolation, making train travel impossibly risky while taxi drivers uniformly refused service.
Unwavering Dedication Amid Pandemic Challenges
In a powerful testament to family devotion, Rachna's husband Alok personally drove her to Mumbai for treatment. She underwent a mastectomy, a stark reminder of their family's cancer legacy that echoed the tragic loss of their father-in-law Raja to stage-4 oral cancer back in the 1970s.
"Cancer has been an integral part of our family's story," reflects Anjana. "We constantly encourage relatives to understand that early detection remains absolutely crucial. Never ignore potential signs, regardless of how insignificant they might initially appear."
Multiple Tragedies Unfold Simultaneously
As Anjana and Rachna navigated their most challenging phases, elder sister-in-law Usha received her own devastating verdict: stage-4 oral cancer in May 2020. Circumstances conspired cruelly against her treatment, with complications and her husband Prakash's spinal surgery forcing altered plans. She was ultimately admitted to Prayagraj's SRN Hospital.
Although Usha underwent surgery, a cascade of medical complications proved insurmountable, leading to her passing on November 19, 2020. Her family was already familiar with cancer's sting—her brother Pradeep Mishra had succumbed to oral cancer in September 2018, despite having previously beaten the disease in 1993.

Currently, their cousin Rakesh, 65, battles prostate cancer at SRN Hospital. Medical experts emphasize that genetic components significantly influence such family patterns.
"Genetic mutations like BRCA1 and BRCA2, famously highlighted in Angelina Jolie's case, can be dominant and substantially increase breast, ovarian, and colon cancer risks," explains Dr. Kaustubh Patel, Ahmedabad's leading head and neck surgical oncologist. "Patients with medullary thyroid cancer carrying RET gene mutations require extra vigilance, while family members should consider regular screening and potentially preventive thyroid removal if mutations are detected."
Dr. Patel adds that genetic cancer research is advancing rapidly globally, with numerous studies focusing on BRCA genes. Importantly, tests to detect genetic cancer possibilities are now available within India itself.
Continuing Legacy of Struggle and Loss
The family's cancer history continued unfolding tragically: Prakash's cousin Shashi had succumbed to blood cancer back in 1995, adding another painful chapter to their ongoing narrative of medical struggle and profound loss.
As the family attempted rebuilding post-pandemic, another devastating blow struck in 2022. Shruti, the vibrant 30-year-old daughter-in-law of Prakash's cousin, was diagnosed with stage-4 nasal cavity cancer. Her symptoms, initially dismissed as acute sinusitis, masked a sinister truth only revealed at dangerously advanced stages.
With a young family including two daughters aged three and one, she was rushed to Mumbai for urgent treatment. Tragically, the cancer had progressed too far, and she ultimately succumbed in June 2023.
