Prayagraj Swelters at 44.6°C, Marking Hottest Day in Uttar Pradesh
The historic Sangam city of Prayagraj experienced an intense heatwave on Sunday, recording a scorching temperature of 44.6 degrees Celsius. This extreme heat established Prayagraj as the hottest location in the entire state of Uttar Pradesh, compelling residents to remain indoors despite it being a holiday.
Widespread Heatwave Across Major Cities
Other prominent cities in Uttar Pradesh also faced severe heat conditions, with no immediate relief forecasted. Varanasi registered a high of 44.2 degrees Celsius, while Banda and Sultanpur recorded temperatures of 43.6 and 43.8 degrees Celsius respectively. The persistent heatwave has created a challenging environment across the region.
The streets of Prayagraj appeared unusually deserted during the afternoon hours as people opted to stay inside to avoid the oppressive heat. Public spaces such as parks and recreational areas witnessed significantly reduced footfall, reflecting the community's response to the dangerous weather conditions.
Medical Experts Issue Critical Health Advisories
Doctors and health officials have urgently advised citizens to implement preventive measures against the extreme heatwave. They warn that these conditions could lead to early-season heatstroke cases and potential health emergencies, emphasizing the importance of proactive safety practices.
Dr. Anupam Dwivedi, the medical officer in-charge of Soraon Community Health Center, provided specific recommendations for maintaining health during the heatwave. "Citizens should consume sufficient water throughout the day and increase their intake of hydrating fluids such as coconut water, lemon water, and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) to maintain proper electrolyte balance," he stated.
Comprehensive Heat Safety Guidelines
Medical professionals have outlined a series of protective measures to combat heat exhaustion and related health risks:
- Hydration and Nutrition: Increase consumption of water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges. Avoid high-protein foods, stale items, and heavy or oily meals that can exacerbate dehydration.
- Sun Protection: Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting cotton clothing to facilitate body cooling. Always cover the head with a cap or towel when venturing outdoors.
- Timing Precautions: Exercise particular caution during peak heat hours between 12 noon and 3 pm, when solar radiation is most intense and heat-related risks are highest.
The combination of these practical measures forms a comprehensive strategy to mitigate the health impacts of the ongoing heatwave. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as temperatures remain elevated across Uttar Pradesh.
