Pune: Dog Beaten to Death by Society Staff; Case Filed
The Vishrantwadi police have registered a case of cruelty to animals against a housekeeping staffer and a watchman of a private housing society in Pune. The accused allegedly beat a stray dog to death with sticks near the society premises early Friday morning.
According to police, the incident occurred around 2 am on Friday. The dog's pained cries were heard by residents of the area as it was being assaulted. A 32-year-old local resident filed a complaint against the duo on the same day. The stray dog used to live near the society and was regularly fed by some residents.
Accused Claim Provocation
During the investigation, the accused staffer told police that he was chatting with the watchman when the dog approached them. He claimed that the dog bit him on his leg without any provocation. In retaliation, both men picked up sticks from the roadside and attacked the animal, beating it to death.
The police have booked the duo under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. The case highlights the ongoing issue of animal cruelty in urban areas and the need for stricter enforcement of animal protection laws.
Residents expressed shock and grief over the incident, emphasizing that the dog was harmless and had become a part of the community. Animal rights activists have called for severe punishment for the accused to deter such acts in the future.
