Health Department Issues Urgent Warning Over Adulterated Ghee in Rajasthan

With consumer demand for ghee experiencing a significant surge, the Rajasthan health department has issued a critical warning to the public regarding the alarming increase in adulterated ghee products being sold across the state. Authorities have discovered that unscrupulous operators are systematically copying the packaging of trusted and well-established brands to deceive consumers into purchasing counterfeit and potentially harmful products.

Recent Enforcement Actions Uncover Widespread Counterfeiting

Recent coordinated enforcement actions by food safety officials have resulted in the seizure of thousands of liters of suspected spurious ghee from various locations. Investigations reveal that these fraudulent products are typically prepared by mixing inexpensive vegetable oils, particularly palm oil, with low-quality ghee. To mimic the authentic appearance and aroma of pure desi ghee, artificial fragrances and colorants are added during the manufacturing process.

Major Counterfeit Operation Uncovered in Bharatpur District

In a significant development on Friday, Saras Dairy, operating as the Bharatpur Milk Producer Cooperative Union, collaborated with health officials to uncover a sophisticated fake ghee operation in Bharatpur district. Officials received specific intelligence that counterfeit Saras-branded packaging was being utilized to sell adulterated ghee at a prominent mall located near Saras Chowraha.

To verify the complaint thoroughly, the Managing Director of Saras Dairy arranged for a trusted individual to purchase ghee packets directly from the suspected mall outlet. When the purchased packet was meticulously compared with an authentic Saras product, authorities identified noticeable differences in wrapper printing quality, packaging materials, and overall presentation, confirming the product was indeed counterfeit.

Additional Raid in Jodhpur Reveals Similar Fraudulent Practices

Just seven days prior to the Bharatpur discovery, food safety officers conducted another successful raid in Jodhpur, where they exposed a fake and adulterated ghee manufacturing unit operating from a factory in the Nandpuri Yojana area, specifically in Anganwa under the jurisdiction of Mandor police station.

The accused operator confessed to mixing substantial quantities of palm oil into cheap, low-quality ghee. To create the characteristic aroma and golden color associated with pure ghee, artificial essences and color additives were incorporated into the mixture. The fraudulent products were then packaged with counterfeit labels of reputable branded ghee and sold at deliberately reduced prices in surrounding villages, targeting economically vulnerable consumers.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that he sourced palm oil at minimal cost from local suppliers in Jodhpur and ordered inexpensive ghee in bulk from Uttar Pradesh to facilitate his illicit operation.

Consumer Advisory and Safety Recommendations

The health department has issued a comprehensive advisory urging all consumers to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant when purchasing ghee products. Officials emphasize the importance of carefully examining packaging details before making any purchase. Key recommendations include:

  • Verify the authenticity of brand logos and printing quality on packaging
  • Check for proper sealing and tamper-evident features
  • Purchase from authorized retailers and established outlets
  • Be wary of products sold at unusually low prices compared to market rates
  • Report any suspicious products or packaging to food safety authorities immediately

Food safety officials have assured the public that ongoing surveillance and enforcement actions will continue across Rajasthan to identify and dismantle additional counterfeit operations, ensuring consumer protection and maintaining food safety standards throughout the state.
