A tragic incident occurred in Malur, Kolar district, on Monday afternoon when a two-year-old boy died after choking on a wild gooseberry, locally known as bettada nelikayi. The child, identified as Vijayendra, accidentally swallowed the large fruit while playing at his home.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, the toddler was playing when he ingested the gooseberry. He soon began struggling to breathe, prompting his parents, Ravi and Mala, to rush him to the government hospital in Malur. However, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Vijayendra's parents are roadside vendors who sell vegetables for a living. Mala had brought the gooseberries home to prepare juice when the toddler accidentally swallowed one. The parents attempted to remove the fruit from the child's throat but were unsuccessful before taking him to the hospital.
Medical Response
Dr. R Srinivas, the administrative medical officer at the government hospital in Malur, stated that the child died before reaching the hospital, so no emergency treatment could be administered. Doctors later removed the gooseberry from the boy's throat during the postmortem examination.
