Dumka: Two men were discovered dead under mysterious circumstances in a field at Siteshnagar village under Mufassil police station limits in Pakur district on Saturday evening. Police suspect the deaths resulted from consuming toxic liquor or some poisonous substance.
Victims identified
The deceased were identified as Nooruddin Sheikh (55) and Motiur Sheikh (45), both residents of the same village. According to locals, the two were seen lying unconscious in a field for an extended period. When villagers approached them, they found both had already died.
Habitual drinkers
Residents informed the police that both men were habitual drinkers and often went together to nearby fields to consume alcohol. On Saturday, they reportedly left for the field around 11 am.
Villagers and police suspect the deaths may have occurred due to excessive drinking or consumption of illicit liquor. Some residents also claimed the men might have consumed a poisonous substance along with alcohol.
Post-mortem conducted
Police took the bodies into custody and sent them for post-mortem at Pakur Sadar Hospital, which was conducted on Sunday.
The officer-in-charge of Mufassil police station, Gaurav Kumar, said prima facie the case appeared to be linked to toxic liquor or some poisonous substance.
“The exact cause of death would be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination report is received. An investigation into the incident is underway,” he said.
