Elon Musk's 9 AM High-Protein Breakfast: Steak, Eggs, and Coffee

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind Tesla, SpaceX, and other groundbreaking ventures, is known for his intense work schedule and unconventional lifestyle. His daily routine, including his breakfast habits, often sparks curiosity and discussion on social media. In a recent update, Musk revealed that his typical breakfast consists of steak, eggs, and coffee—a high-protein meal that fuels his demanding day.

The Morning Routine

According to a 2023 interview with The Wall Street Journal, Musk usually goes to bed around 3 a.m. and sleeps for six hours, waking up around 9 a.m. each day. He starts his morning with a protein-rich breakfast, traditionally an omelette and coffee. However, in a December 2025 appearance on The Katie Miller Podcast, he shared an updated glimpse into his morning routine, stating that his typical breakfast now is "steak and eggs and coffee."

What Is Steak and Eggs?

Steak and eggs is a classic high-protein meal that combines a cooked steak—often cuts like ribeye, sirloin, or filet—with eggs, which can be fried, scrambled, or poached. This hearty dish is strongly associated with American cuisine, particularly as a filling breakfast option. It gained popularity in the mid-20th century among working-class communities and later became a staple of diner culture. Interestingly, NASA has reportedly served this combination to astronauts before space missions due to its high protein content.

Coffee as Fuel

Coffee is often described as fuel, and Musk relies on it to boost his energy and alertness. The caffeine in coffee blocks adenosine, a brain chemical that induces fatigue, while increasing adrenaline levels to improve physical performance and reaction time. Black coffee contains almost zero calories, providing energy without extra caloric intake.

His Love for Donuts

Despite his high-protein breakfast, Musk has a soft spot for donuts. In 2023, he tweeted that he eats one every morning, defying advice that sugar is unhealthy. Over the years, Musk has admitted he doesn't follow the healthiest diet. In 2020, on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, he said, "I'd rather eat tasty food and live a shorter life." This philosophy reflects his prioritization of enjoyment over strict health regimens.
