The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has initiated a project to develop a dedicated jogging track at Leisure Valley Park in Sector 29. The authority has invited tenders for the construction of an eco-friendly synthetic track, aiming to enhance recreational facilities at one of the city's most frequented public spaces.
Project Details
Under the proposed plan, an ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) synthetic track will be laid over the existing unpaved pathway. The track will measure approximately 2 kilometers in length, 2.5 meters in width, and 16 millimeters in thickness. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 3.8 crore.
Officials stated that the selected agency must complete the construction within six months of the work order and will be responsible for maintaining the track for five years.
Benefits of EPDM Surfaces
The authority highlighted that the track is designed as a low-impact jogging surface suitable for both children and adults. EPDM synthetic surfaces are known for their durability, shock absorption, and environmental friendliness, making them ideal for recreational and fitness activities.
Resident Reactions
Local residents have welcomed the initiative, noting that the existing earthen track often becomes uneven and challenging to use, particularly during the monsoon season. Akash Ashish Kumar, a resident of DLF Phase 4, shared his experience: “I have been visiting the park for morning walks for the past seven to eight years. During rains, the track becomes muddy and uneven due to waterlogging, making it uncomfortable and sometimes unsafe for walkers and joggers. Even in summer, a lot of dust rises. A synthetic track will provide a much better experience for regular visitors.”
Background and Additional Improvements
The development follows an announcement by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini a month ago, who unveiled plans for a synthetic jogging track at the park during the inauguration of a light-and-sound show featuring 3D projection mapping. That project, also executed by GMDA, cost around Rs 8 crore.
Officials reported that several other enhancement works have already been completed at the park, including repairs to the boundary wall and installation of lighting along walking paths. “Plantation maintenance and construction of public toilets are also being carried out under corporate social responsibility (CSR) support from Hyundai Motor India. One public toilet has already been completed, while another is under construction,” an official said.
Furthermore, a consultant has been engaged to prepare a detailed project report for further beautification of the park.
