College Canteen Shut Down Following Reptile Tail Contamination Incident
The canteen at Thanthai Periyar Government Arts and Science College in Trichy has been immediately shut down after a disturbing incident where six students fell ill. The students reported feeling unwell after sharing a soft drink bottle that allegedly contained the tail of a reptile, specifically identified as a skink.
Students Hospitalized and Stable After Consuming Contaminated Drink
On Wednesday, the affected students were urgently taken to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) for medical attention. According to hospital reports, all students are now in stable condition and recovering well. The students informed doctors that they detected an unusual taste upon sipping the drink, which prompted them to inspect the bottle more closely.
"The students found the taste unusual when they took a sip. Upon closer inspection, they noticed a tail-like object inside the bottle," stated Principal K Angammal. "The canteen has been closed, and our council will decide on the further course of action to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future."
Food Safety Investigation and Student Protests Erupt
In response to the incident, food safety personnel have collected samples from the contaminated bottle and sent them for detailed laboratory testing. The investigation is being expanded to include the soft drink manufacturing unit located in Somarasampettai, with the food safety department planning a thorough inspection. The designated food safety officer was unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
Condemning the lack of safety standards, a section of students, led by SFI district president G K Mohan, organized a protest in front of the college. They are demanding a comprehensive investigation and stricter enforcement of food safety regulations. "Fortunately, the students are stable. What if something serious had happened? A police complaint was also registered over the issue," Mohan emphasized during the protest.
