Himachal CM Sukhu Announces Major Healthcare Expansion in Hamirpur

In a significant move to bolster healthcare services, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu conducted an inspection of the ongoing construction at Hamirpur Medical College on Friday. During his visit, he unveiled ambitious plans for a comprehensive healthcare upgrade, including the establishment of a modern Cancer Care Centre, along with new nursing and dental colleges within the campus.

Rs 1,000 Crore Investment in Healthcare Infrastructure

The project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 1,000 crore, reflecting the state government's commitment to enhancing medical facilities. Chief Minister Sukhu emphasised that this development aims to bring quality healthcare closer to residents, significantly reducing the need for them to travel outside Himachal Pradesh for advanced treatments. He highlighted that the state government is actively upgrading healthcare infrastructure across all medical colleges and major hospitals in the region.

Addressing High Cancer Incidence Rates

Himachal Pradesh faces one of the highest cancer incidence rates in the country, trailing only the north-eastern states. To combat this, Sukhu announced the establishment of a dedicated cancer hospital at Hamirpur. This facility will be part of a broader State Cancer Centre at Dr Radhakrishnan Government Medical College in Hamirpur, underscoring the government's dedication to strengthening healthcare services for the people.

Comprehensive Cancer Care with Eleven Specialist Departments

The new Cancer Care Centre will feature eleven newly approved specialist departments, ensuring a holistic approach to cancer treatment. These departments include:

  • Medical Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Paediatric and Women's Cancers
  • Pain Management
  • Pathology
  • Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplants
  • Anaesthesia
  • Radiology

This integrated setup will enable patients to receive comprehensive cancer care within the state, saving them considerable time and expenses associated with out-of-state treatments.

Focus on Prevention and Timely Diagnosis

Chief Minister Sukhu stressed the critical importance of systematic cancer screening, prevention, and timely diagnosis as part of the state's healthcare strategy. By investing in these new facilities, the government aims to not only treat cancer but also proactively address its root causes through early detection and public health initiatives.

The announcement marks a pivotal step in Himachal Pradesh's efforts to modernise its healthcare system, promising improved access and outcomes for residents across the state.
