KGMU Unveils Advanced Lung Transplant Unit to Revolutionize Respiratory Treatment in Uttar Pradesh
In a significant development for healthcare in Uttar Pradesh, King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow is establishing an advanced lung transplant unit. This initiative is poised to deliver world-class treatment to patients suffering from severe lung diseases directly within the state, reducing the need for travel to distant medical centers.
Announcement at AIPCON 2026 Conference
The groundbreaking announcement was made during AIPCON 2026, an advanced interventional pulmonology conference organized by the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at KGMU. This event brought together leading experts to discuss innovations in respiratory care.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand emphasized that the development of sub-specialty services, such as this new unit, will enable more precise and patient-centered treatment. She highlighted KGMU's commitment to advancing medical science and improving outcomes for those with complex lung conditions.
Expert Insights on Progress in Pulmonology
Former Vice-Chancellor Prof Ravi Kant and renowned pulmonologist Prof Digambar Behera also spoke at the conference, noting the rapid progress in interventional pulmonology across India. They underscored KGMU's growing role in this field, with the university already playing a key part in diagnosing and treating lung cancer through advanced techniques.
Doctors from the department detailed their use of sophisticated methods, including advanced bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)-guided investigations, imaging-guided procedures, and multidisciplinary oncology care. These approaches facilitate early and accurate diagnosis, which significantly enhances the chances of successful treatment for patients.
Addressing Lung Cancer and Risk Factors
Experts at the conference stressed that lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer deaths globally. They advocated for early detection, regular screening, and timely intervention as critical measures to prevent many such fatalities.
Specialists identified several major risk factors for cancer, including:
- Tobacco use
- Air pollution
- Alcohol consumption
- Obesity
- Lack of physical activity
They advised the public to seek medical consultation if symptoms such as persistent cough, breathlessness, unexplained weight loss, or unusual swelling appear, as these could indicate underlying health issues.
Goals of the Conference and Future Collaboration
Organizing secretary Prof Ved Prakash explained that the conference aimed to strengthen clinical skills, introduce advanced techniques, and promote collaboration among healthcare professionals. This collective effort is designed to ensure that patients receive safer and more effective respiratory care, leveraging the latest innovations in the field.
The establishment of the lung transplant unit at KGMU marks a pivotal step in enhancing Uttar Pradesh's healthcare infrastructure, offering hope and improved treatment options for individuals battling severe lung diseases.
