Patiala Hospital Marks Medical Breakthrough with First Cochlear Implant Surgery

In a significant advancement for regional healthcare, Government Medical College (GMC) and Rajindra Hospital in Patiala have successfully performed their first cochlear implant surgery. This milestone, achieved last week, underscores the institution's commitment to providing cutting-edge ENT care and specialised hearing rehabilitation services in Punjab.

Expert Team Leads the Procedure

The surgery was conducted under the leadership of Prof (Dr) Sanjeev Bhagat, head of the department of otorhinolaryngology (ENT), who spearheaded the surgical team. Dr Bhagat emphasized that this achievement was made possible through the guidance of medical educators and research minister Dr Balbir Singh, highlighting a dedicated effort to enhance patient treatment quality.

Mentorship played a crucial role, with Prof (Dr) Surinder Kumar Singhal from GMCH-32 Chandigarh providing essential clinical planning and execution support. The procedure involved seamless coordination across multiple departments, including:

  • Anaesthesia
  • Audiology
  • Operation theatre staff
  • Nursing officers

This collaborative approach ensured the surgery was conducted smoothly and safely, setting a high standard for future operations.

Patient Outcome and Rehabilitation

The patient, who suffered from severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss, underwent a successful implantation and is currently in stable condition post-operatively. Moving forward, the patient will engage in regular auditory-verbal rehabilitation to optimize hearing outcomes. Dr Bhagat noted that this milestone reflects the hospital's growing capabilities in managing complex hearing disorders.

Leadership and Institutional Support

The achievement was driven by the dynamic leadership of Prof (Dr) Raminderpal Singh Sibia, director-principal of GMC Patiala, whose vision and administrative efforts have strengthened tertiary-level healthcare services at the institution. Additionally, Dr Vishal Chopra, medical superintendent of Rajindra Hospital, provided critical infrastructural and operational support, facilitating the successful execution of the procedure.

Dr Sibia announced that with this surgery, GMC and Rajindra Hospital have formally launched their Cochlear Implant Programme. This initiative aims to offer new hope to children with congenital or acquired severe hearing loss, significantly improving access to advanced ENT and hearing rehabilitation services across Punjab. He emphasized that the programme is expected to transform healthcare delivery in the region, making specialised treatments more accessible to the community.

This development marks a pivotal step in Punjab's medical landscape, showcasing how institutional collaboration and expert leadership can drive innovations in patient care and rehabilitation.
