Karnataka Budget Infuses Rs 180 Crore for Jayadeva Mysuru Cardiac Expansion

In a significant move to enhance healthcare infrastructure, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's 17th budget has allocated an additional Rs 180 crore for the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, Mysuru unit. This announcement brings major relief to heart patients across Mysuru and the neighboring districts of southern Karnataka, where cardiovascular disorders are on a sharp rise.

New Three-Storey Block to Add 200 Beds

Following the budget allocation, the hospital management has initiated plans to construct a new three-storey block, which will add 200 more beds to the existing 400-bed facility. Since its inception, the Mysuru unit of Jayadeva has screened and treated an impressive 16 lakh heart patients, underscoring its critical role in regional healthcare.

Dr. B Dinesh, director of the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research Centre in Bengaluru, confirmed to TOI that construction of the new 200-bed facility has already commenced on the vacant land available on the Mysuru campus. The building will be equipped with a cath lab, operation theatres, wards, and other essential infrastructure to support advanced cardiac care.

Alarming Heart Disease Statistics in Karnataka

The urgency for this expansion is highlighted by concerning health data. Between January and May 2025, Karnataka recorded 6,943 deaths due to heart attacks, averaging 1,388 fatalities per month from cardiovascular disorders. The state has reported the highest number of fatalities among people below 45 years, indicating a troubling trend in younger populations.

In the Mysuru region specifically, Hassan district alone reported 507 heart-related deaths over the past two years. With an 8% increase in heart-related cases in Mysuru and adjoining districts over the last year, the demand for specialized cardiac care has surged, putting immense pressure on existing facilities.

Addressing Rising Demand and Improving Access

Although Jayadeva's units in Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Kalaburagi together have more than 1,600 beds, the annual rise in patients suffering from heart ailments continues to outpace capacity. The Mysuru unit currently handles 800–1,200 outpatients daily and treats around 400 in-patients, with many patients facing delays due to bed shortages.

The new three-storey block is expected to ease pressure on the Bengaluru unit and significantly improve patient access to specialized cardiac care in the region. Dr. Dinesh emphasized that the rising number of cardiac patients in Mysuru and surrounding districts has forced many to wait for beds, and this expansion will ensure timely, hassle-free treatment.

Additionally, the project is set to create employment opportunities for local residents, contributing to the economic development of the area. This strategic upgrade not only addresses immediate healthcare needs but also strengthens the long-term resilience of Karnataka's cardiac care network against the growing burden of heart disease.
