In a significant medical advancement, AIIMS-Patna has successfully performed a complex limb salvage procedure on a 25-year-old bone cancer patient, preserving his leg in a case that demonstrates remarkable progress in advanced cancer care within India's public healthcare system.
Patient's Journey from Misdiagnosis to Specialized Treatment
The patient, Makar Dhwaj from Deoria in Uttar Pradesh, had been suffering from persistent pain and swelling in his left leg for several months. Initially treated elsewhere for what was believed to be a routine fracture following minor trauma, his condition showed no improvement despite conventional treatment approaches.
When he arrived at AIIMS-Patna on May 13, 2025, medical professionals detected a pathological fracture of the tibia, which prompted immediate and thorough evaluation for possible malignancy. Detailed investigations subsequently confirmed Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer that has historically often required amputation in similar cases.
Multidisciplinary Approach to Complex Cancer Care
Rather than proceeding with conventional amputation, AIIMS-Patna established a comprehensive multidisciplinary tumour board involving specialists from multiple departments including orthopaedics, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology. This collaborative team developed a sophisticated limb salvage plan specifically designed to achieve complete cancer control while preserving the patient's mobility and long-term functionality.
The patient underwent systematic chemotherapy between August 2025 and January 2026, which doctors reported significantly reduced the tumour burden and substantially improved the feasibility of the subsequent surgical intervention.
Advanced Surgical Procedure and Recovery Process
On March 13 this year, surgeons at AIIMS-Patna carried out the highly specialized limb salvage operation. The surgical team restored structural stability using titanium plates and screws, while performing muscle flap reconstruction to support optimal healing and improve functional outcomes.
This innovative approach enabled complete oncological clearance while successfully avoiding amputation and its associated physical and psychological consequences. The patient's recovery has been particularly encouraging, with physiotherapy initiated on the second day after surgery with a strong focus on early mobilization.
Within three weeks, the patient was discharged in stable condition and had regained the ability to walk with appropriate support, marking a significant milestone in his rehabilitation journey.
