Christina Applegate's Candid Account of Life with Multiple Sclerosis
In a deeply personal revelation, actress Christina Applegate has shared the difficult realities of living with multiple sclerosis, disclosing that she spends the majority of her days confined to her bed. The 54-year-old star, who received her diagnosis in 2021, spoke openly ahead of the release of her upcoming memoir, highlighting how chronic pain has dramatically reshaped her daily existence.
A Life Centered Around Her Bed
During an interview with People magazine, Christina Applegate explained that her daily routine now revolves almost entirely around her king-sized bed. The only regular activity that gets her out of the house is driving her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie, to school each morning. "Taking her to school has become my favorite thing to do," Applegate told the publication, emphasizing this precious time with her daughter despite her physical limitations.
Understanding Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that attacks the central nervous system, and for Applegate, the condition has progressively worsened over time. Symptoms now significantly affect her hands, making simple tasks like holding her phone or television remote challenging. The actress has endured more than 30 hospitalizations in just three years, undergoing extensive medical tests and radiation exposure as part of her treatment regimen.
Applegate has discussed these medical challenges extensively on her podcast MeSsy, which she co-hosts with fellow actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also lives with multiple sclerosis. Their conversations provide a raw, unfiltered look at the realities of managing this chronic condition.
Memoir Chronicles Resilience and Struggle
Her upcoming book, You With the Sad Eyes, scheduled for release on March 3 by publisher Hachette, lays bare her complete journey. The memoir covers her challenging childhood in 1970s Laurel Canyon, her rise to fame, ongoing body image struggles, her mother's addiction issues, and the profound impact of multiple sclerosis on her life. Applegate notes that the disease has trapped her with haunting memories she would prefer to forget.
The actress has extended her candor to various media appearances, including a recent interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where she discussed creative coping mechanisms like naming her limbs to manage her symptoms. She also revealed she has been journaling since age 10 and continues to use writing as both therapy and a means to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis. "It's tough. I won't sugarcoat it," she told Kimmel during their conversation.
Parenting Amid Health Challenges
Perhaps the most difficult aspect of her condition is how it affects her ability to be fully present for her daughter. While Applegate cherishes their morning school runs, she typically returns home exhausted and retreats to bed immediately afterward. Her health journey includes additional layers of complexity, having undergone a double mastectomy in 2008 following a breast cancer diagnosis, adding to her survivor narrative.
Despite these challenges, Applegate maintains meaningful connections, including her enduring friendship with former Married... with Children co-star Ed O'Neill, which she describes as a bright spot from her sitcom days that continues to bring joy to her life.
