A study by researchers from King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow has revealed that long-term stress exacerbates rheumatoid arthritis (RA) by increasing swelling and joint damage. However, a natural compound found in eucalyptus oil may help mitigate these effects.
Study Details
The research, published in the journal Cureus, was conducted on Wistar rats. The team was led by Dr. Nitu Nigam from the Cytogenetics Unit, along with Lavkush Tiwari and Dr. Urmila Dhakad from the Department of Rheumatology.
How Stress Worsens RA
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks healthy joints. Researchers induced RA in rats and subjected them to stress for 28 days. The results showed that stressed rats had increased swelling, weaker grip strength, reduced movement, and greater joint damage. Stress amplified inflammation and oxidative damage caused by harmful molecules.
Role of Eucalyptol
The rats were treated with eucalyptol, a natural compound in eucalyptus oil known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, methotrexate (a standard arthritis drug), or a combination of both. Eucalyptol effectively reduced swelling, protected joints, and improved the body's defense mechanisms even under stress. At higher doses, its efficacy was comparable to methotrexate.
Combination Therapy Shows Promise
The best outcomes were observed when eucalyptol was combined with methotrexate. This combination significantly reduced swelling and joint damage, bringing many indicators close to normal levels. Researchers noted that eucalyptol works by reducing inflammation and protecting joint tissues.
Importance of Stress Management
The study emphasizes that managing stress is crucial in arthritis treatment. However, since the research was conducted on animals, human trials are necessary before eucalyptol can be recommended as a treatment. The findings add to evidence that stress management may slow disease progression and improve quality of life for RA patients.
