Kerala Medical Officers Association Escalates Protest Over Suspended Doctor

The Kerala Government Medical Officers' Association (KGMOA) is preparing to intensify its ongoing protest regarding the suspension of a doctor linked to an alleged medical negligence case at Nedumangad district hospital. Doctors have already initiated a boycott of outpatient services at the facility, with plans to expand their actions significantly in the coming days.

Outpatient Services Disrupted Across District Hospitals

Medical professionals are currently protesting by boycotting outpatient services at Nedumangad district hospital. Protestors have confirmed that no outpatient services will be available on Monday at this hospital. The doctors have issued a warning that they may also boycott their duties during the upcoming Attukal Pongala festival, a major religious event in the region.

Furthermore, the association has decided to extend their outpatient department boycott to all hospitals in the district on Tuesday, potentially affecting healthcare access for thousands of patients across the region.

Core Demands of the Protesting Doctors

The protesting medical officers have presented two primary demands:

  1. Immediate withdrawal of the suspension of gynaecologist Dr. Bindu Sundar
  2. Arrest of individuals who allegedly assaulted the hospital superintendent

The KGMOA maintains that Dr. Sundar's suspension is unjust and that hospital staff deserve protection from violence while performing their duties.

Investigation Findings in Newborn Death Case

An expert team investigating the alleged medical negligence case has reportedly found serious lapses by the doctor in a case where a newborn died during a caesarean section procedure. According to investigation reports:

  • There was a significant delay in performing the caesarean section
  • The inquiry committee determined that a decision could have been made earlier in the medical process

The findings from a three-member expert team from SAT Hospital have been formally submitted to the director of medical education for further review and action.

Additional Patient Allegations Surface

Meanwhile, another patient has come forward with serious allegations against Dr. Bindu Sundar. Hasna Fathima, a 23-year-old woman, claims she suffered severe health complications after Dr. Sundar performed a caesarean section on her on June 19, 2025.

According to Fathima's account:

  • During the procedure, an injury to her genital area resulted in a 2.7cm tear in her rectum
  • She returned to the hospital days later due to persistent pain
  • When she cried out in discomfort, Dr. Sundar allegedly called her arrogant
  • The doctor reportedly treated her wound only after receiving a bribe of Rs 2,000

Dr. Sundar has reportedly claimed the rectal injury was caused by travel rather than surgical error. As Fathima's condition deteriorated, she was transferred to a medical college hospital where she underwent five subsequent surgeries.

The medical complications have had devastating personal consequences for Fathima and her family. Her husband was forced to sell his autorickshaw and take loans to cover her extensive medical treatment. Fathima now relies on an external bag for bowel movements and reports she cannot even hold her young son due to her physical condition.

The Kerala Government Medical Officers' Association continues to demand Dr. Sundar's reinstatement while multiple investigations into the medical negligence allegations proceed. The situation highlights ongoing tensions between medical professionals, hospital administration, and patient rights advocates in Kerala's healthcare system.
