In a critical medical intervention, doctors at NRS Hospital in Kolkata successfully removed a large seed lodged in the airway of a 13-year-old girl, restoring her breathing and preventing a potentially fatal outcome. The teenager, hailing from Mallarpur in Birbhum district, was brought to the outpatient department on Thursday morning after experiencing severe shortness of breath for five days. Her condition was so critical that she required immediate oxygen support upon arrival. According to her parents, the girl had accidentally ingested a fruit seed a few days earlier, which led to the alarming symptoms.
An initial medical evaluation revealed a collapse of the right lung, raising strong suspicions of an airway obstruction. To confirm the diagnosis, a CT scan was conducted, which clearly identified the presence of the seed—approximately 2 cm in size—blocking the opening of the right main bronchus and severely impeding airflow.
Minimally Invasive Procedure Saves the Day
The medical team, led by doctors Jaydip Deb, Pulak Kumar Jana, and Sukanta Kodali, performed a fibre-optic bronchoscopy, a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure designed to visualise and treat airway problems. This technique allowed the doctors to precisely locate and remove the seed without the need for more invasive surgery, significantly reducing recovery time and risk for the young patient.
