Madurai: Eye doctors at the Govt Rajaji Hospital in Madurai successfully managed two highly complex ocular trauma cases, saving the patients from severe, permanent injuries.
First Case: Child with Antenna Wire in Eyelid
In the first incident, a 10-year-old boy was brought to the hospital after an antenna wire from a remote accidentally lodged in his right lower eyelid. While the injury initially appeared superficial, the spring-like wire curved inward, creating a significant risk of deeper injury to the eye. The specialised ophthalmology team took the child into surgery under general anaesthesia and, after a meticulous procedure, doctors removed the wire without damaging the eye, preserving the child's vision without any permanent injury.
Second Case: Man with Foreign Body in Brain
The second case involved a 50-year-old man with an eye injury referred from Theni following a road traffic accident. A CT scan revealed a 6.7-cm-long tubular foreign body passed through his left eye and entered the middle cranial cavity, with its tip resting in his medial temporal lobe. After appropriate opinions, the medical team explored the orbital floor and sinus tract and extracted the entire object.
Expert Advice on Handling Eye Injuries
Orbit chief Dr Parvatha Sundari explained that any manipulation of the body while trying to remove the sticking-out foreign body by anxious attenders can sometimes drive it deeper, making removal complicated, as in the young boy's case. She emphasized the importance of seeking immediate professional medical help in such trauma cases.
