In a landmark achievement for cardiac care in Karnataka, Kasturba Hospital in Manipal has etched its name as the first medical centre in the state to perform a cutting-edge procedure known as excimer laser coronary angioplasty (ELCA). This pioneering move followed official approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).
A New Era for Treating Complex Heart Blockages
The hospital has successfully leveraged this new technology to treat patients with particularly challenging heart conditions. Since the inaugural procedure on December 13 last year, the cardiac team has completed an impressive 75 laser-assisted angioplasty procedures. This innovative technique offers a precise and safe alternative for opening severely blocked heart arteries, especially in cases where conventional angioplasty or bypass surgery might be too complex or pose a higher risk.
Expert Leadership Behind the Milestone
All these groundbreaking procedures were conducted under the expert guidance of two leading cardiologists. Dr. Padmakumar, the head of the cardiology department, and Dr. Tom Devasia, a professor and unit head, spearheaded the efforts. Dr. Devasia's role extends beyond the hospital, as he also serves as a global proctor for laser-assisted angioplasty, training other doctors in this advanced methodology.
What This Means for Patients in India
The introduction of ELCA technology at Kasturba Hospital represents a significant leap forward in interventional cardiology within the region. For patients with difficult-to-treat coronary artery disease, this provides a new, potentially life-saving option. The procedure uses a cool laser light to vaporize plaque blockages with high precision, minimizing damage to the arterial walls. This milestone not only enhances the hospital's capabilities but also positions Karnataka at the forefront of adopting advanced medical technologies for better patient outcomes.
