Prayagraj: Rare Jaw Surgery Saves 9-Year-Old Boy

Prayagraj Hospital Achieves Medical Milestone with Rare Pediatric Jaw Surgery

In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at SRN Hospital in Prayagraj have successfully performed a rare and highly complex surgical procedure on a 9-year-old boy, giving him a new lease on life. The young patient had been suffering for nearly a year from persistent swelling and pain on the left side of his face, which significantly impacted his daily activities and overall well-being.

Diagnosis of a Rare Pediatric Condition

The child was admitted to the Cancer Surgery department on December 25, 2025, where comprehensive medical examinations revealed the presence of an extremely uncommon tumour known as Ameloblastoma in his left jaw, specifically the mandible. This type of tumour is particularly rare in children and, if left untreated, can lead to severe facial deformity, difficulty in chewing, and impaired speech, making timely intervention crucial.

Complex Surgical Procedure and Team Effort

On December 29, a specialised surgical team, led by Dr Mohit Jain, head of the Plastic Surgery department, and cancer surgeon Dr Rajul Abhishek, undertook an intensive 8-hour operation. The procedure involved the complete removal of the affected part of the jaw and subsequent reconstruction using bone harvested from the boy's leg, specifically the fibula. This innovative approach aimed to restore both the aesthetic appearance and functional capabilities of the jaw.

Dr Rajul Abhishek highlighted the significant challenges associated with such surgeries in pediatric patients, stating, "This surgery is particularly difficult in children. Our objective was not only to remove the tumour completely but also to preserve the child's facial structure, chewing ability, and speech." The operation utilised advanced microvascular techniques to ensure adequate blood supply and promote optimal healing, showcasing the hospital's commitment to cutting-edge medical practices.

Successful Recovery and Public Health Advisory

Following the surgery, the child demonstrated steady recovery and responded positively to the treatment regimen. He was discharged from the hospital earlier this month, marking a significant milestone in his journey toward a healthy life. Reflecting on the case, Dr Rajul Abhishek issued a crucial public advisory, emphasising, "People should not ignore any persistent lump or swelling on the face or body. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential to prevent complications and ensure better outcomes."

This successful surgery not only underscores the expertise and dedication of the medical team at SRN Hospital but also serves as a beacon of hope for families dealing with similar rare conditions. It highlights the importance of advanced surgical techniques and multidisciplinary collaboration in achieving positive health outcomes for pediatric patients.
