Haryana Mental Health Helpline Gets 16K Calls, Integrated with Emergency 112

A state-run mental health helpline in Haryana has become a crucial safety net, handling more than 16,000 calls as residents increasingly seek help for anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts. The Tele-MANAS service, launched in late 2022, has experienced a dramatic rise in usage over the past 12 months.

Rapid Increase in Call Volume

According to officials, over 60% of all calls received since inception occurred between May 2025 and April 2026. This surge indicates growing public trust and a reduction in the stigma associated with mental health care. The helpline offers confidential counselling through toll-free numbers, with significant participation from rural and semi-urban areas.

As of May 10, 2026, the system had handled 16,159 calls, with 9,669 of those received in the last year alone. Counsellors have addressed issues such as stress, grief, substance abuse, and self-harm ideation.

Integration with Emergency Services

In a significant step to improve crisis intervention, the government has integrated Tele-MANAS with Haryana's '112' emergency response system. Suicide-related distress calls made to emergency services are now instantly redirected to specialised counsellors.

Dr. Sumita Misra, Additional Chief Secretary for Health and Family Welfare, commented: "This is a transformative step in ensuring mental healthcare is accessible and affordable for every citizen."

Round-the-Clock Support

The helpline operates under the National Tele Mental Health Programme, providing 24-hour support to callers from all socioeconomic backgrounds. The integration aims to ensure that no individual in crisis is left without immediate professional assistance.
