Tollywood Fights Mental Health Stigma: FCTWEI & SSKM Launch Workshops After Suicides
Tollywood Launches Mental Health Workshops After Suicides

In a critical response to a series of tragic suicides, the Federation of Cine Technicians’ Workers of Eastern India (FCTWEI) has joined forces with Kolkata's premier SSKM Hospital to launch pioneering mental health workshops for Tollywood professionals. This initiative aims to dismantle the deep-seated stigma and provide concrete support to an industry grappling with silent suffering.

A Lifeline for a Struggling Industry

The urgent program was announced by FCTWEI president Swarup Biswas on December 4, directly addressing the recent suicides of two cinematographers who succumbed to depression. Biswas revealed that within a week of the announcement, a structured support system would be activated at the Federation's office. Psychiatrists from SSKM Hospital will conduct sessions three times a month, offering a safe space for industry workers. Crucially, those in need will receive free treatment at SSKM Hospital.

Breaking the Silence with Action and Awareness

The first sensitization workshops have already taken place at Dassani Studio, led by experts Mayank Kumar and Debapriya Bhowmick from SSKM's Institute of Psychiatry (IOP). The session saw participation from key figures including producer Nishpal Singh Rane and Snehasish Chakraborty. Dr. Amit Bhattacharya, Director of IOP, confirmed the psychiatry department's full commitment. "We have started regular awareness programmes and sensitization workshops. Counseling services and priority-based treatment will be provided," he stated.

Dr. Bhattacharya emphasized the availability of a free national helpline at 14416, assuring complete confidentiality for callers. He described the inaugural workshop, attended by around 100 participants, as "fruitful," highlighting its role in reducing the harmful stigma that often prevents individuals from seeking help due to fears of job loss.

Personal Battles and Public Advocacy

The initiative gains powerful resonance from personal testimonies within the industry. Music director and filmmaker Indraadip Dasgupta publicly shared his battle with clinical depression, challenging the culture of silence. "If I can talk about having a fever, why can’t I do so about my clinical depression?" Dasgupta questioned, offering support to peers. He powerfully debunked the myth that mental health struggles hinder creativity, revealing he composed the poignant song "Tomake Chuye Dilam" for the film "Bastu Saap" during his depressive episode.

This collaborative effort between FCTWEI and SSKM Hospital marks a significant step toward safeguarding the well-being of Tollywood's freelance workforce, who often face immense professional uncertainty. By providing accessible, confidential, and free mental health resources, the initiative hopes to prevent future tragedies and foster a healthier, more supportive work environment for all.
