Pharmacist Warns Banana Before Bed Disrupts Sleep

UK-registered pharmacist Amir Singh has gone viral on TikTok with a video rating sleep techniques, stunning viewers by warning that a common bedtime snack may actually sabotage rest. According to Singh, bananas, often considered a healthy pre-sleep snack due to their magnesium and potassium content, can have the reverse effect.

“It’s really high in sugar, actually, so it’s probably going to keep you up,” Singh said in the video. Bananas are widely promoted as the perfect pre-bedtime companion on wellness blogs, but Singh highlights an uncomfortable truth: the fruit contains enough natural sugar to send blood glucose soaring when the body is trying to wind down. He explained that consuming high-sugar foods before sleep triggers the release of glucose into the bloodstream, mobilising the body to process that energy and essentially pressing a “stay awake” button.

Milk Before Bed Also Discouraged

Singh also advised against drinking milk before bed, particularly for those who are lactose intolerant. “Five, if you’re lactose intolerant, it’s an awful idea. We all had it as kids before bed, so you might feel a bit nostalgic and it gets you to sleep,” he said. Despite the tradition of warm milk as a sleep aid, Singh argues it can cause discomfort and disrupt rest for many people.

Evidence-Based Sleep Tips

Instead of relying on questionable food choices, Singh recommends a more evidence-based approach to improve sleep architecture. Simple tips include eating your last meal at least a couple of hours before bedtime, maintaining a cool bedroom temperature, avoiding screens for at least an hour before bed, and limiting caffeine intake in the hours leading up to sleep. These strategies can help promote restful sleep without the metabolic interference caused by high-sugar snacks like bananas.
