In a move that's ruffling feathers across Bengaluru, BJP MLA S. Suresh Kumar has made a compelling appeal to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to impose a complete ban on feeding pigeons in public parks and spaces throughout the city.
The Health Hazard Behind the Proposal
The seasoned legislator from Rajajinagar constituency has highlighted several critical concerns driving this initiative. Accumulated pigeon droppings pose significant health risks, potentially transmitting dangerous zoonotic diseases to humans. These include serious respiratory illnesses and infections that could affect park visitors, especially children and elderly citizens who frequent these green spaces.
Environmental and Infrastructure Damage
Beyond health concerns, Kumar emphasized the substantial damage caused by pigeon overpopulation. "The acidic nature of pigeon excreta is corroding public infrastructure and historical structures," he noted in his appeal to BBMP authorities. The droppings are damaging:
- Park benches and playground equipment
 - Walking paths and pavements
 - Monuments and public art installations
 - Vehicles parked near feeding areas

Growing Public Nuisance
The MLA also pointed to the increasing public nuisance created by large pigeon congregations. Excessive bird feeding has led to overcrowding of pigeons, creating unhygienic conditions and making parks less enjoyable for citizens seeking relaxation and recreation.
Call for Public Awareness and Enforcement
While proposing the ban, Suresh Kumar stressed the need for complementary measures:
- Public awareness campaigns about the dangers of pigeon feeding
 - Clear signage in public parks explaining the prohibition
 - Strict enforcement mechanisms by BBMP authorities
 - Alternative solutions for bird enthusiasts

This proposal comes as Bengaluru continues to grapple with maintaining its green spaces while ensuring public health and safety. The BBMP's response to this appeal is eagerly awaited by both environmentalists and public health experts.
