Chhattisgarh's Massive Health Drive Screens Millions for Diabetes and Hypertension

In a significant public health initiative ahead of World Diabetes Day, the Chhattisgarh health department has revealed impressive numbers from its statewide screening campaign for non-communicable diseases. The comprehensive drive has tested millions of citizens for diabetes and hypertension, identifying hundreds of thousands who are now receiving treatment.

Staggering Screening Numbers Revealed

According to official data from the National NCD Portal, over 38.6 lakh citizens underwent diabetes screening while 37.7 lakh people were checked for blood pressure between April and October 2025. The extensive testing identified 6.88 lakh individuals with diabetes and 11.82 lakh citizens with hypertension, all of whom are now receiving comprehensive care through the state's integrated NCD management system.

Health Secretary Amit Kataria emphasized the importance of these findings during a state health review meeting, stating that early detection and proper management are crucial for controlling these widespread health conditions.

Health Officials Lead by Example in Screening Camp

Demonstrating their commitment to the cause, the health department organized a special screening camp at Raipur Circuit House during a two-day state health review meeting. The event saw 110 health officers and employees voluntarily undergo health checks, with revealing results that highlighted the pervasive nature of these conditions even among healthcare professionals.

Among those screened, 41 officials were detected with high blood pressure and nine were found to have elevated blood sugar levels. The camp, jointly organized by the directorate of health services and the Raipur district health team, served as both an awareness initiative and a practical demonstration of the screening process.

Comprehensive 'Screening to Service' Model Implemented

Chhattisgarh has established a robust 'screening to service' model that ensures citizens identified with NCDs receive continuous care from diagnosis through treatment. The system provides seamless access to testing facilities, necessary medications, and professional counselling services across all healthcare levels - from primary health centers to district hospitals.

Health Secretary Kataria stressed the importance of personal responsibility in health management, stating, "Healthy citizens are the foundation of a healthy state. Regular health check-ups and a balanced lifestyle are the best medicine one can adopt." He urged officials to set an example and encourage community members to maintain balanced diets, exercise regularly, manage stress effectively, and avoid substance use.

The health department's core message for World Diabetes Day reinforces this approach: "Be the guardian of your health, get screened regularly, and take a step towards a healthier life." The massive screening initiative represents Chhattisgarh's determined effort to combat the growing threat of non-communicable diseases through early detection and comprehensive care.
