Mangaluru is witnessing an increase in Hepatitis A and Hepatitis E cases, prompting health authorities to ramp up surveillance efforts in affected areas. District Health Officer (DHO) Dr H R Thimmaiah confirmed that health officials have visited 832 households as part of active surveillance within a 1.5-kilometer radius of Donagarkeri in Mangaluru.
Surveillance Details
The door-to-door checks aim to identify new cases, trace contacts, and educate residents about preventive measures. Dr Thimmaiah stated that the surveillance is focused on early detection to curb further spread. The area was identified as a hotspot after a cluster of cases was reported.
Rising Cases and Public Health Response
Hepatitis A and E are viral infections that primarily spread through contaminated food and water. Symptoms include jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain, and nausea. The health department has urged residents to practice good hygiene, drink boiled water, and avoid street food. Additional teams have been deployed to monitor the situation and ensure timely medical intervention.
Impact and Preventive Measures
The rise in cases has raised concerns about water quality and sanitation in the region. Authorities are conducting water testing and chlorination drives. According to Dr Thimmaiah, no severe complications have been reported so far, but vigilance remains high. Residents are advised to seek medical attention if symptoms appear. The health department continues to coordinate with local civic bodies to contain the outbreak.
