Karnataka: Rain Subsides in Malnad, Inflow Rises at Hemavathi Dam
Rain Subsides in Malnad, Hemavathi Dam Inflow Rises

Rainfall has subsided in the Malnad region of Karnataka, but the region's dams are experiencing increased inflows. The Hemavathi dam, a key water reservoir, recorded an inflow of 15,647 cusec on Thursday, while the outflow was maintained at 300 cusec, according to official data.

Improved Water Storage in Hemavathi Dam

The rise in inflow comes after a spell of heavy rain in the catchment areas of the Hemavathi river, which flows through the Malnad region. The dam, located in Hassan district, is a major source of irrigation and drinking water for the region. The current inflow is expected to boost the water storage levels significantly, providing relief to farmers and residents.

Officials from the Karnataka Water Resources Department confirmed that the dam's water level is rising steadily. “The inflow has increased due to runoff from the catchment areas. We are monitoring the situation closely,” a department official said.

Impact on Agriculture and Drinking Water Supply

Increased water storage in the Hemavathi dam is crucial for the kharif season, as farmers in the command area rely on the reservoir for irrigation. The dam also supplies drinking water to several towns and villages in Hassan and surrounding districts. With the monsoon active, further increase in inflow is expected in the coming days.

However, the subsiding rain in the Malnad region has brought some relief from flood-like situations that were reported in low-lying areas earlier this week. No major damage or casualties have been reported so far.

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has advised authorities to remain vigilant as the monsoon trough remains active. The center expects intermittent rain in the region over the next few days, which could sustain the inflow into the dams.
