The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather warning for Uttar Pradesh, forecasting dense to very dense fog during night and morning hours until December 29. The alert specifically covers the Kanpur division and other parts of the state, with an added warning for severe cold day conditions expected on December 28 and 29.
Chilly Winds and Temperature Fluctuations Grip the Region
Residents of Kanpur are already grappling with intense cold. According to Sunil Pandey, a weather scientist at CSA University, the city is currently under the influence of north-easterly winds blowing at speeds between 3.1 kmph and 6.4 kmph. These winds are making the daytime feel unusually chilly. Pandey indicated that the speed of north-westerly winds is likely to increase in the coming days, exacerbating the cold.
"There will be fluctuations in day and night temperatures in UP, including Kanpur division. Chilling conditions will be witnessed during night, morning, evening and now even during the day," Pandey explained. He further added that high humidity levels are likely to cause persistent pollution and fog during morning and evening hours, with a strong possibility of dense fog forming in several areas.
Current Weather Metrics and Health Advisory
Recent data highlights the prevailing conditions. Kanpur recorded a minimum temperature of 9.6 degrees Celsius, which is approximately 2 degrees higher than Friday's minimum. The maximum temperature was noted at 18.7 degrees Celsius, with the maximum relative humidity reaching a high of 93 percent.
In light of the harsh weather, medical professionals have issued crucial advice. Doctors are strongly recommending that elderly people, senior citizens, and children avoid going outdoors, particularly for early morning walks. To maintain health during this cold spell, they advise wearing warm clothing and engaging in light indoor exercises.
Staying Safe During the Cold Wave
The combination of dense fog, cold winds, and low visibility poses multiple challenges. The IMD's warning of cold day and severe cold day conditions across both eastern and western Uttar Pradesh underscores a widespread weather event. Citizens are urged to stay updated on forecasts, plan travel carefully to avoid fog-related disruptions, and prioritize protective measures to safeguard against cold-related illnesses.
