In response to escalating public complaints about a severe mosquito problem, the Kochi Municipal Corporation has rolled out a focused, one-month action plan to tackle the menace. The initiative will kick off with scientifically supervised spraying and fogging operations across the city.
Scientific Offensive Against Mosquitoes
Mayor V K Minimol informed the council that the health department has been directed to address the mosquito nuisance on a priority basis. The strategy is two-pronged: targeted spraying of larvicide in canals three times a week, followed by extensive mass fogging in affected areas. This systematic approach aims to disrupt the breeding cycle and reduce adult mosquito populations that have been troubling residents.
Waste Collection Fee Revision and Legal Formalities
In a related civic matter, Mayor Minimol clarified the status of the proposed increase in user fees for organic waste collection from households. While a previous council decision sought to raise the fee from Rs 150 to Rs 200, the existing waste management bylaw still stipulates the old rate. Therefore, to implement the hike, the bylaw must first be amended. The Mayor assured that the decision will not be rushed and will only take effect after all necessary legal procedures are duly completed.
Addressing Konthuruthy Canal and Thuruthy Flats
The council also discussed critical issues concerning rehabilitation and housing. For the rehabilitation of residents living along the shores of the Konthuruthy canal, the municipal secretary has been entrusted with overseeing the required legal follow-up actions. A multi-party representative group has decided to engage with the state government to find a permanent solution. A crucial discussion with local residents is scheduled for 10 am on December 12 to address the situation arising from a recent High Court order.
Regarding the Thuruthy flats, Mayor Minimol stated that after a thorough review of all relevant documents, the process for allotment is set to commence, with a deadline set for before January 30.
The corporation's combined actions signal a concerted effort to address immediate public health concerns like mosquito control while methodically working through procedural requirements for other civic decisions affecting Kochi's residents.
