Kochi is set to observe National Deworming Day on January 6 with a focused drive to administer tablets to children and adolescents across the district. The initiative targets the crucial age group of 1 to 19 years, aiming to combat parasitic worm infections and promote better health.
Comprehensive Tablet Distribution Plan
The deworming medication will be provided free of cost across various educational institutions. The tablets will be distributed in government, aided, and private schools, ensuring wide coverage. For children who do not attend formal schools, the local anganwadi centres will serve as the distribution points. The district administration has also made provisions for those who might miss the initial date; a mop-up day is scheduled for January 12 to ensure no child is left out.
Key Decisions from the District Health Meeting
The blueprint for this public health campaign was finalized at a recent meeting chaired by District Collector G Priyanka. The meeting served as a platform to review and launch multiple health projects for Ernakulam. Collector Priyanka emphasised that health must be the foremost priority in the new year, urging everyone to pay special attention to nutritious eating, adequate sleep, regular exercise, and overall wellness.
Beyond deworming, the meeting charted out plans for two other significant campaigns. It was decided to extensively conduct the Ashwamedham 7.0 campaign, which is focused on the eradication of leprosy. As part of this awareness drive, a trained team will undertake home visits across the district from January 7 to 20. For this purpose, a substantial force of 4,830 volunteers has already received necessary training.
A Push for Holistic Wellness
The health department also plans to expand the 'Aarogyam Anandam Vibe 4 Wellness' programme. This government initiative is designed to encourage a healthier lifestyle among citizens to prevent the onset of lifestyle diseases. The district collector stressed the importance of this holistic approach, linking preventive care like deworming with long-term wellness habits.
The coordinated effort for National Deworming Day, coupled with the leprosy awareness drive and the wellness programme, underscores a proactive multi-pronged strategy by the Ernakulam health department to safeguard community health starting from the very beginning of the year.
