Low-Birth-Weight Baby Saved Under Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana

A private hospital in Rampura Phool town in Bathinda district has successfully treated a premature low-birth-weight baby under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana, with the parents not having to spend anything on the critical care treatment.

Critical Condition at Birth

According to a press release issued on Sunday, the newborn baby of Resham Singh and Gurmail Kaur weighed only 1.926 kg at birth, which is below the normal birth weight range of 2.5 to 4 kg. The baby boy suffered from severe respiratory distress, and it was determined that breathing was not possible without medical intervention.

Dr. Surender Aggarwal, along with his medical team, acted promptly, and the baby was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). There, machines provided support for the underdeveloped lungs that were not yet capable of functioning independently. Given the critical nature of every moment, the baby was placed under close observation for 17 days.

Treatment and Recovery

The newborn required continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) support for 10 days, followed by oxygen support for an additional four days. During this period, neonatal jaundice developed, which was treated with phototherapy. Feeding was carefully managed through limited Kangaroo Mother Care.

Dr. Aggarwal remarked, "In the NICU, progress does not come in leaps. It comes quietly, one stable reading at a time. Slowly, signs of improvement began to appear."

After 17 days of intensive treatment, the baby was discharged a couple of days ago in stable condition, now weighing 2.106 kg. Although still delicate, the infant is significantly stronger and on the path to recovery.
