The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places until July 4. The alert comes as the city grapples with waterlogging and traffic disruptions, with the Andheri subway being closed to vehicular movement due to inundation.
Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos
Heavy rains since early morning have led to significant waterlogging in low-lying areas of Mumbai. The Andheri subway, a key arterial road, was shut down for traffic as water levels rose, causing long detours for commuters. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deployed pumps to drain water, but the situation remained challenging.
According to the IMD, Mumbai recorded 89 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on July 1. The weather office has warned of the possibility of landslides in vulnerable areas and advised residents to avoid non-essential travel.
Orange Alert Details
The orange alert, which indicates the need to be prepared for adverse weather, covers Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and parts of Raigad district. The IMD stated that a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea is likely to intensify, leading to enhanced rainfall activity. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the Maharashtra coast.
"We are expecting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next few days. People should stay indoors and avoid waterlogged areas," said an IMD official.
Impact on Local Train Services
Local train services, the lifeline of Mumbai, were also affected. Waterlogging on tracks near Kurla and Vidyavihar stations led to delays and speed restrictions on the Central Railway line. Western Railway reported normal operations but cautioned about possible disruptions. The BMC has set up control rooms to monitor the situation and coordinate relief efforts.
School and College Closures
In response to the heavy rain forecast, the Maharashtra government declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar on July 1. "As a precautionary measure, educational institutions remain closed to ensure the safety of students," said an official from the state education department.
Preparedness Measures
The BMC has activated its disaster management machinery, with pumps and rescue teams stationed at vulnerable spots. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been kept on standby. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to move to safer locations. The civic body also urged people to report waterlogging and tree falls via its helpline numbers.
Long-Term Forecast
The IMD has predicted that the monsoon will remain active over Maharashtra for the next week. The orange alert is likely to be extended if the weather system persists. Authorities are bracing for more rainfall, with the possibility of flash floods in coastal areas.
