Wall collapse kills three in Mangaluru's Nagori area
A compound wall collapsed on four houses in the Nagori area of Mangaluru during heavy rain early on July 1, 2026, killing three people, including two children. The victims belonged to two families, according to local officials.
The incident occurred around 3:30 am when a 30-foot-long stretch of a compound wall gave way due to incessant rain, crashing onto the adjacent homes. Rescue teams, including fire and emergency services, rushed to the spot and pulled out the bodies from the debris.
Victims identified
The deceased were identified as Shabana (35), her son Ayaan (6), and neighbor Sameer (8). Shabana's husband, who was also in the house, sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized. The other family, living in a separate portion of the damaged houses, escaped with no casualties as they were away.
According to Mangaluru City Corporation officials, the wall belonged to a private property and was in a dilapidated condition. Heavy rain over the past 24 hours had weakened the structure, leading to the collapse.
Heavy rain triggers multiple incidents
Mangaluru and surrounding areas have been experiencing heavy rainfall since June 30, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for Dakshina Kannada district. Several low-lying areas have reported waterlogging, and tree falls have been reported across the city.
District authorities have set up relief camps and are conducting inspections of vulnerable structures. Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, K. V. Rajendra, said, "We have instructed all ward officers to identify unsafe buildings and walls and take preventive action. The affected families will be provided compensation as per government norms."
Compensation announced
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai expressed grief over the incident and announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also directed officials to ensure speedy relief and rehabilitation.
The local MLA visited the site and assured all possible assistance. Residents have demanded stricter enforcement of building safety norms, especially in areas with old structures.
Weather forecast
The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in coastal Karnataka for the next two days. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. The district administration has deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams in vulnerable areas.
