Odisha Schools Shift to Morning Classes Amid Heatwave

Bhubaneswar: Amid continuing heatwave conditions across the state, the district administrations in Cuttack and Khurda on Thursday announced morning sessions for all government and private schools from June 19 to 25.

As per directives issued by the respective collectors, schools in both districts will function from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM to protect students from exposure to extreme daytime temperatures. The announcement came on a day schools reopened in 20 of Odisha’s 30 districts following a summer vacation of more than a month and a half.

In Nuapada district, schools resumed on Thursday but are operating with morning classes from 6:30 AM to 11:30 AM in view of the prevailing weather conditions.

While government-run schools initially reopened with regular timings from 10 AM to 4 PM, concerns over rising temperatures prompted district administrations to revise schedules in vulnerable areas. Several students and parents expressed concern about attending classes in the hot and humid weather.

Schools across the state had remained closed since April 27 following an intense spell of summer heat. The government has empowered collectors to take decisions on school reopening, closure, or adjustments in school timings based on local weather conditions to ensure student safety.
