Ludhiana is witnessing a severe stray dog crisis, with over 8,900 dog bite cases recorded in the first six months of 2026, according to data from the Civil Hospital. Between January and June, the hospital's OPD and Emergency departments reported 8,962 cases, averaging nearly 50 victims per day. Despite a gradual monthly decline, the numbers remain alarmingly high, leaving residents panicky.
Worst-Hit Localities and Daily Life Disruption
Among the most affected areas is Gandhi Colony in Model Gram, where residents say stray dogs roam in packs, chasing pedestrians and vehicles. Children walking to school, elderly morning walkers, and two-wheeler riders are particularly vulnerable. Parents now forbid children from playing outside without adult supervision, and senior citizens avoid stepping out alone during early morning or late evening. Some residents have resorted to carrying sticks for self-defense.
Other localities like Model Town and Dugri also report frequent attacks. Residents allege that despite repeated complaints to authorities, the problem remains unresolved. They demand that the Municipal Corporation launch a special drive to capture aggressive canines and accelerate the sterilization program.
Health Experts Urge Immediate Wound Care
Health experts advise anyone bitten by a dog to wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes before seeking medical treatment. They stress that anti-rabies vaccination should not be delayed, as timely treatment is essential to prevent rabies. The high number of cases underscores the urgency of sustained action.
Residents Call for Stronger Enforcement
Residents urge the corporation and Animal Birth Control teams to identify high-risk areas and deploy dedicated teams. They believe stronger enforcement, regular sterilization drives, and prompt removal of aggressive strays are essential to make neighborhoods safe. Without concrete action, they fear the number of dog bite victims will remain high despite repeated complaints.
