Rajahmundry Milk Adulteration Tragedy: Death Toll Climbs to 11
The death toll in the Rajahmundry milk adulteration case has risen to 11, marking a devastating public health crisis in the region. A 73-year-old woman, identified as S Ramalaxmi, succumbed to acute renal failure on Sunday while undergoing treatment at Delta Hospital. This latest fatality underscores the severe and ongoing impact of the contamination incident that has gripped the community.
Current Medical Situation and Treatment Efforts
Nine other individuals are currently receiving medical care in various hospitals, all of whom are undergoing dialysis due to the severity of their conditions. Alarmingly, five of these patients remain on ventilator support, highlighting the critical nature of their health struggles. The medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilize the victims, but the prognosis remains uncertain for many.
Timeline of the Tragedy and Forensic Findings
The milk adulteration incident occurred on February 16 in the Chowdeswara Nagar and Swaroopa Nagar areas of Lalacheruvu, after residents consumed the contaminated milk. The deaths have unfolded over several weeks, with one person dying on February 22, three on February 23, one on February 24, and one each on March 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8. Among the deceased are six men and three women, reflecting a broad demographic impact.
Forensic reports from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) have confirmed that the victims suffered from acute renal failure, which progressed to multi-organ failure. The cause was traced to the consumption of milk contaminated with Ethylene Glycol (EG), a highly toxic industrial chemical not meant for human ingestion. This finding has raised serious questions about food safety protocols and regulatory oversight in the area.
Broader Implications and Community Response
The incident has sparked widespread concern and outrage among local residents, who are demanding stricter enforcement of food safety standards and accountability from authorities. Health officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious food products, while investigations continue to determine the source of the contamination and prevent future occurrences.
As the community mourns the loss of lives, this tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of robust food safety measures to protect public health. The ongoing treatment of the nine hospitalized individuals remains a priority, with hopes for their recovery amidst this challenging situation.
