Suicide Prevention Project Expands to Ramanagara and Ballari
Suicide Prevention Project Expands to Ramanagara, Ballari

The Karnataka government's comprehensive suicide prevention project, initially launched in 2023, has now been extended to the districts of Ramanagara and Ballari. The project was designed as a community-based model that aligns with India's National Suicide Prevention Strategy (2022) and the World Health Organization's 'Live Life' framework.

Background and Objectives

Originally launched in 2023, the project aims to reduce suicide rates through a multi-pronged approach involving community engagement, mental health awareness, and access to care. The model emphasizes early identification of at-risk individuals, training of frontline workers, and strengthening of referral systems.

Alignment with National and Global Strategies

The initiative is in line with India's National Suicide Prevention Strategy, which seeks to reduce suicide mortality by 10% by 2030. It also incorporates the WHO's 'Live Life' framework, which focuses on four key interventions: restricting access to means, responsible media reporting, promoting socio-emotional life skills, and early identification and care.

Expansion to New Districts

The extension to Ramanagara and Ballari marks a significant step in scaling up the project across Karnataka. Local health officials, community leaders, and non-governmental organizations will collaborate to implement the program, which includes training sessions for teachers, police, and healthcare providers.

Community-Based Approach

The project's community-based model involves setting up suicide prevention committees at the village and ward levels, conducting awareness campaigns, and establishing helplines. Special attention will be given to vulnerable groups, including farmers, students, and women.

Officials expressed optimism that the expansion will help reduce the stigma around mental health and encourage more people to seek help. The project is expected to serve as a model for other districts in the state and beyond.
