Students at Government High School, Govindpuri, in Yamunanagar learned how adopting good hygiene and cleanliness can prevent diseases such as diarrhoea during an awareness programme organised by the Swachh Bharat Mission team of the Municipal Corporation. The event was part of the ‘Adopt Cleanliness, Drive Away Disease’ campaign and was conducted on the instructions of Mayor Suman Bahamani and Municipal Commissioner Mahabir Parsad.
Key hygiene practices highlighted
Akash Kumar, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) Specialist with the Swachh Bharat Mission, explained that regular handwashing with soap, drinking clean and safe water, using clean toilets, and maintaining cleanliness around homes are effective measures to prevent diseases like diarrhoea. He also informed students about the importance of ORS and zinc during illness.
Kumar interacted with the students and created awareness about solid waste management. “We encouraged the students to separate wet and dry waste at home and at school, dispose of waste properly and maintain a clean environment. Students were also urged to educate their families and people around them about the importance of cleanliness,” said Akash Kumar.
Campaign objectives and student pledge
Gagan, associated with the Swachh Bharat Mission, said the objective of the campaign was to create awareness among students about cleanliness, health and environmental protection so that they could adopt hygienic habits themselves and spread the message of cleanliness across society.
During the programme, the students also took a pledge to maintain cleanliness and keep their surroundings clean. The initiative aims to instil lifelong hygiene habits in young students and leverage them as agents of change in their communities.
