Telangana TB Battle: 7,663 New Cases Found in Screening

Hyderabad: Nearly 28,000 tuberculosis (TB) patients are currently under treatment in Telangana, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla said on Friday, as officials reported the detection of 7,663 new cases during a recent 100-day intensive screening campaign across the state.

Review of TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan

Reviewing the progress of the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan at Lok Bhavan, the governor noted that the newly identified patients had been linked to treatment following large-scale screening of vulnerable populations. The campaign, which targeted high-risk groups, has significantly enhanced case detection efforts in the state.

Tuberculosis Cases in Telangana

Officials informed the governor that more than 3.87 lakh vulnerable individuals were screened during the campaign, with 1.68 lakh chest X-rays conducted to identify potential TB cases. The exercise led to the detection of 7,663 new patients, underscoring the importance of active case finding in controlling the disease. This large-scale screening has helped in early diagnosis and prompt initiation of treatment, thereby reducing the transmission of TB in communities.

Challenges Ahead

While acknowledging steady progress, the governor cautioned that challenges remain, particularly in tribal and remote areas where patients often discontinue treatment, avoid diagnostic tests, or struggle with nutritional deficiencies. These factors contribute to the persistence of TB in certain pockets of the state. The governor emphasized the need for targeted interventions to address these barriers, including community engagement and nutritional support for patients.

Infrastructure and Future Plans

The review highlighted the extensive infrastructure created by the state to combat TB. Telangana currently has 171 TB units, 435 TB detection centres, 191 rapid molecular testing facilities and 52 portable handheld X-ray devices. These facilities are designed to support early diagnosis and ensure timely treatment. Governor Shukla said detailed reviews would be conducted at the district level to address local challenges and accelerate progress towards the goal of a 'TB-free Telangana'. He urged officials to leverage technology and strengthen surveillance systems to achieve the target.
