The Ministry of Education has ordered a high-level investigation into allegations that the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) question paper was leaked, following viral social media claims that surfaced on July 9, 2026. The probe aims to verify the authenticity of the leaked material and determine if any security breach occurred during the examination process.
Viral Claims Trigger Action
On Thursday, several social media posts circulated screenshots purportedly showing the UGC NET question paper before the scheduled exam date. The posts quickly gained traction, prompting widespread concern among candidates and academic circles. In response, the Education Ministry issued a statement confirming that it has taken cognizance of the matter and initiated an inquiry.
“The Ministry of Education has directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged leak of the UGC NET question paper. Strict action will be taken against anyone found guilty,” the official statement read. The NTA, which conducts the UGC NET, has been asked to submit a detailed report within 48 hours.
Impact on Candidates and Exam Integrity
The UGC NET is a crucial examination for determining eligibility for assistant professor positions and for awarding Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges. Over 10 lakh candidates appear for the test annually. The leak allegations have caused anxiety among test-takers, many of whom have demanded a re-examination if the leak is confirmed.
“This is a serious matter that undermines the credibility of the examination system. We urge the authorities to investigate thoroughly and ensure that honest candidates are not disadvantaged,” said a representative of the All India UGC NET Candidates Association. The association has threatened to stage protests if the inquiry is not conducted transparently.
Government Response and Previous Incidents
The Education Ministry has assured candidates that the examination process will be reviewed to prevent any future breaches. This is not the first time the UGC NET has faced controversy; in 2024, similar claims of paper leaks led to the cancellation of exams in some centers. The government has since implemented stricter security measures, including digital encryption and CCTV monitoring.
“We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of examination integrity. The investigation will be completed at the earliest, and appropriate action will be taken,” said a senior ministry official. The NTA has also set up a helpline for candidates to report any suspicious activity.
Next Steps and Candidate Advisory
Candidates have been advised not to panic and to rely only on official announcements from the NTA and the Education Ministry. The investigation team will examine the origin of the leaked screenshots and cross-check them with the actual question paper. If the leak is confirmed, the ministry may consider canceling the affected exam and conducting a retest.
“We urge all candidates to remain calm and focus on their preparation. The ministry will ensure that the interests of genuine students are protected,” the statement added. Meanwhile, social media platforms have been asked to remove posts containing the alleged leaked content to prevent further misinformation.
