USFDA Recalls 9 Cookware Items, 4 Indian Firms Named for Lead Leaching Risk
USFDA Recalls Indian Cookware Over Lead Contamination

The age-old adage 'we are what we eat' has taken on a new, alarming dimension in today's world. Beyond the quality of ingredients, the very pots and pans we use to cook our meals can pose a serious threat to our health. The United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has issued a stern warning, highlighting the dangers of lead leaching from certain types of imported cookware, with several Indian manufacturers under scrutiny.

USFDA Sounds the Alarm: Indian-Made Cookware Under Recall

In a significant move for consumer safety, the USFDA has released a list of nine cookware products that may leach dangerous levels of lead into food during cooking or storage. This action follows an earlier warning in August 2025 against products from the Indian company Saraswati Strips Pvt. Ltd. The latest advisory implicates four Indian companies whose products have been recalled from the US market.

The agency specifically warns against certain imported cookware made from aluminum, brass, and aluminum alloys known as Hindalium/Hindolium or Indalium/Indolium. Tests conducted by the FDA and its state partners confirmed that these materials can release lead under conditions that mimic normal cooking use. The FDA has advised retailers and consumers to stop selling and using these hazardous items immediately.

List of Recalled Products and Indian Manufacturers

The USFDA has identified the following products, which were sold through specific retailers in California, primarily by distributor Lotus Mom Corporation (doing business as Indian Kitchen Mart). Consumers are urged to check their kitchens for these items:

  • IKM Aluminum Saucepan (Model: 7023672411878 Aluminum Pan 2 Size Pouted Wooden Handle 9”). Manufacturer: JSM Foods, New Delhi, India.
  • Brass Tope. Manufacturer: Kraftwares (India) Ltd., Mumbai, India.
  • Aluminum Kadai Size 5 – A cook brand. Manufacturer: Kraftwares (India) Ltd., Mumbai, India.
  • IKM 4-Quart Pital Brass Pot (Model: 7023672414398 Brass Hammered Handi No 3). Manufacturer: JSM Foods, New Delhi, India.

The primary retailers listed are India Metro Hypermarket in Fremont, CA, and INDIA CASH AND CARRY, also in Fremont, CA.

Why Lead in Cookware is a Silent Health Crisis

The USFDA emphasizes that lead is toxic to humans at all ages, and there is no known safe level of exposure. Even minimal contact can lead to severe health complications. The agency notes that young children, women of child-bearing age, and breastfeeding mothers are at a higher risk from food cooked in such contaminated vessels.

For babies and children, lead consumption can be particularly devastating, potentially causing:

  • Learning disabilities and developmental delays.
  • Lower IQ scores.
  • Behavioural problems.

At higher exposure levels, symptoms in adults and children can include fatigue, persistent headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, and neurological changes. The danger is amplified by the fact that lead accumulates in the body over time.

Official Advice: What You Must Do Now

The USFDA has issued clear guidelines for consumers who might own these products:

  1. Immediately check your home for any of the listed cookware products.
  2. Throw away any cookware suspected of leaching lead. Do not donate, sell, or attempt to refurbish it.
  3. If you have concerns about potential lead exposure or elevated lead levels, contact your healthcare provider promptly.

The responsibility also lies with retailers and distributors to ensure that all cookware sold complies with FDA safety regulations and is fit for its intended use. This recall serves as a critical reminder for consumers globally to be vigilant about the safety standards of their kitchenware, as health truly begins in the pots we use.
