Mountaineer Sameera Khan Champions HPV Vaccination Awareness for Girls in Odisha
In a significant push towards enhancing girls' health and empowerment, mountaineer and endurance cyclist Sameera Khan conducted a comprehensive awareness program for girl students in Rayagada town on Monday. The initiative placed special emphasis on critical health issues, particularly highlighting the importance of HPV vaccination to prevent cervical cancer.
Emphasizing Awareness and Early Prevention
Addressing the students directly, Sameera Khan stressed that awareness serves as the fundamental first step toward effective prevention. "Awareness is the first step towards prevention," she stated. "Many young girls remain unaware of cervical cancer and the availability of vaccines that can save lives. Through my journey, I want to make this knowledge accessible, especially in rural areas."
Nationwide Solo Cycling Campaign for Empowerment
A resident of Anantapur district in Andhra Pradesh, Sameera Khan has been traveling across Odisha since March 3 as part of her ambitious nationwide solo cycling campaign. This campaign is specifically aimed at empowering rural girls across India. Her outreach efforts skillfully blend discussions on health, mental resilience, and personal safety with crucial conversations around social challenges such as discrimination, abuse, and patriarchal barriers.
An Accomplished Adventurer's Mission
As an accomplished adventurer, Sameera Khan has summited 11 peaks across the Himalayas and parts of Europe, and has cycled across 37 countries. Since launching her self-imposed campaign in March 2025, she has covered an impressive distance of over 7,000 kilometers, reaching more than 1,000 schools across 11 states.
During her visit to Odisha, she met with Chief Secretary Anu Garg and Women & Child Development Secretary Mrinalini Darswal. These officials encouraged her to incorporate HPV vaccination awareness into her campaign. Acting on this valuable suggestion, Sameera has been actively sensitizing schoolgirls on cervical cancer prevention, emphasizing timely vaccination and the urgent need to break taboos surrounding women's health.
Extensive Coverage Across Odisha
Prior to reaching Rayagada, she covered several districts across the state, taking her vital message to both rural and urban schools. Her interactive sessions combine motivational accounts from her mountaineering and cycling journeys with practical guidance, helping build confidence and informed decision-making among young girls.
"It gives me immense satisfaction interacting with tribal students in Rayagada and sensitizing them about various health issues and women's empowerment," she shared. "My last stoppage in the state is in Malkangiri."
Inspiration Behind the Journey
An entrepreneur in adventure activities by profession, Sameera Khan revealed that the idea for this transformative journey took shape after observing how girls in many foreign countries enjoy greater empowerment compared to those in India. This observation motivated her to work directly at the grassroots level, bringing essential health knowledge and empowerment messages to young girls across the nation.
